UMBILICAL VEIN THROMBOSIS

• Rare event (1-3).
• Usually secondary to:
• Stricture of the cord.
• Cord torsion.
• Cord hematoma.
• Varix.
• Absence of Wharton's`jelly.
• Placental abruption.
• Infection.
• May rarely be primary (3).

UMBILICAL ARTERY THROMBOSIS

• Often accompanies umbilical vein thrombosis for the same above reasons.
• Very few cases of umbilical arterial thrombosis without associated venous thrombosis (4,5).
